About Melanie
Ive always felt like the relationship between a health-care provider and her patient should be just that- a relationship. You get to know me. I get to know you. And we work together as a team to get you feeling aaawwweeesssoooommmmeee.
With that said, here's the abbreviated version of who am I? (Since you already know what I do) Who am I? I'm a lover of life, a walking-talking smile in full-body form, an adventurer, a singer, a teacher, and a proud mother of a two not-so-little "kids": a Doberman Pincher named Brooklynn, and a Yellow Labrador named Lebowski (aka: "The Dude"). I am blissfully engaged to Ben, the love of my life, and am looking forward to our wedding in September of 2013.
I moved to Scottsdale, AZ. in January 2010 after being born and raised and spending almost 30 years in the beautiful, green, fun-filled city of Austin, Texas- the self-proclaimed "live music capitol of the world." In Austin, I developed a passion for the outdoors, for live music and dancing and with the utter magic of human body. I've been completely fascinated with the "healing arts" since I was a kid and have spent the last 10 years actively studying every different tool for facilitating healing for people that I could get my hands on. I have this crazy idea that everyone can have having a happy, healthy life and joyful communication with their bodies- and I've made it my job to share what I've learned and my healing techniques with everyone who's actually interested in such things and will sit still long enough to hear about it. Does that sound like something you'd be interested in?
These days, when I'm not hiking Arizona with the "kids," enjoying time with Ben, or out at some event shaking hands and making new friends, I'm at the office, guiding and encouraging my patients with a "teach a man
to fish" philosophy and I feel is a critical missing piece in the modern healthcare system. I believe in helping my patients thoroughly
understand what's going on with their own bodies so that they can learn how to take an active
participation in their own healing process. So obviously there's a lot more to what makes me ME, but I promised you the abbreviated version. For all the technical/professional stuff about what got me to where I am, and what I do, feel free to read on: I achieved my Master of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine degree at the world-renowned Academy of Oriental Medicine in Austin. AOMA provided me with highest quality of training in all aspects of Oriental Medicine including Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Asian Bodywork. I am licensed by the state of Arizona to practice Acupuncture and OM, am nationally board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), and a member of the American Association of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (AAAOM).
Although I can and do treat a broad spectrum of physical conditions, I place a special emphasis on the treatment of chronic digestive disorders and educating my patients about natural nutrition as the key to providing their bodies with the building blocks they need for optimum repair and maintenance of all body systems. There is a growing body of evidence that shows that gut health, in particular, affects bodily functions far beyond digestion and that nutrition (eating the right things and NOT eating the wrong things) is FAR more important that the modern medical system would have you believe. Virtually every chronic, degenerative disease has its roots in malnutrition due to improper diet or a malfunctioning digestive system. Often both.
I know that
people are occasionally nervous about seeing a complementary or alternative healthcare provider... "What if they tell me to stop eating meat?" (I won't) or "I'm
too tired to exercise every day!" (then we just figure out first why you're
tired). I am committed to finding new ways for you to break out
of your old routines, and to supporting you in establishing new habits and new ways of thinking that will allow you
to finally achieve your health goals. Yes- in many cases, I will recommend that some changes be made,
but they will be choices YOU make after becoming more aware of what's really going on.
